Black History Month 2009 TV Schedule

Happy Black History Month!!! & Welcome to the 10th edition of The Black History Month Television Schedule.

Note that all times are EST and some shows/times are specific to NYC so be sure to check your local listings. Also check the TV listing for additional air dates of many of these shows. Be sure to set your TIVOs/DVRs/VCRs (do people still use these?) as many of the programs come on early in the morning. Use the calendar on the right to navigate the site (ignore the days and use the dates, I will update if i get a chance).

Honestly I was so busy witnessing Black History (American History) and trying to make some memories of my own that I almost forgot about doing this ... but you can't neglect your history! I continue to marvel at what my people were able to accomplish under much harsher circumstances than I will ever comprehend and it motivates me to make it happen. We also can't be prisoners to our history. We have to dare and dream bigger. Last BHM I could not have imagined what I would witness over the next 12 months.

The site is still a work in progress and I will be constantly updating as more info becomes available so check back frequently.

One would think that putting this would be getting easier with the internet and all. Not So. Because of the internet people can wait until the last minute to publish their schedules. Its seems like many channels are pushing their BHM programming to thier digital counterparts. TV One has really stepped their game up I continue to be impressed with their efforts if not always their execution. The other channel that shall remain nameless is bringing a bunch of straight to DVD movies and recycled programming and has got to do better.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: EYES ON THE PRIZE(PBS)
The groundbreaking documentary series examining America’s civil rights years returns to public television as part of AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. Covering the period from the murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till in Money, Mississippi, and the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott through school desegregation, the march from Selma to Montgomery and the Voting Rights Act, EYES ON THE PRIZE is considered the definitive history of this formative time in the nation’s life.

FANNIE LOU HAMER: COURAGE AND FAITH (PBS)
Using archival footage and interviews with those who knew her well and were affected by her actions, this program chronicles the extraordinary life of Fannie Lou Hamer and introduces her to a new, younger generation. Mrs. Hamer attended the 1964 Democratic National Convention as a member of the Mississippi Democratic Freedom Party and challenged the all-white Mississippi delegation.

INDEPENDENT LENS “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” (PBS)
This film takes an in-depth look at machismo in rap music and hip-hop culture — where creative genius, poetic beauty and mad beats collide with misogyny, violence and homophobia.

SHARED HISTORY (PBS)
SHARED HISTORY is the intimate story of the relationship between two families whose connection was forged in slavery and has endured to the present. The filmmaker, the great-great-granddaughter of a slave owner, and Rhonda Kearse, a descendant of one of the enslaved families, seek to understand and reconcile the reality of slavery with the shared lives and affections between the families.

SISTERS OF SELMA: BEARING WITNESS FOR CHANGE (PBS)
This program is an unabashedly spiritual take on the Selma, Alabama, voting rights marches of 1965 from some of its unsung foot soldiers – Catholic nuns. Following the violence of “Bloody Sunday,” sisters from around the country answered Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to join the protests in Selma.

THE STORY OF OSCAR BROWN JR. (PBS)
This documentary focuses on Chicago native Oscar Brown Jr.’s work as a writer and performer for more than half a century.

ZORA’S ROOTS (PBS)

This program examines the life of author and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, best known for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God.

On September 12, 1970, the fully integrated USC football team soundly defeated the all-white Alabama Crimson Tide--and landed a deathblow to a shameful era in American history. HBO Sports presents this documentary that chronicles the integration of college football in the South, focusing on the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and its profound effect on the racial status quo of college athletics. The film tells the personal stories of some of those who helped achieve equality on the field, looks at the impact of segregation on black high-school stars forced to travel to integrated schools, and culminates with the September 1970 game between the University of Southern California, featuring star running back Sam "Bam" Cunningham, and the University of Alabama team led by legendary head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.
